VW's Twin-Charger Is 2006's Best New Engine
May 15, 2006

If VW's new twin-charger engine had a fireplace mantel, it'd have two shiny new awards to put on it.
Volkswagen's technologically advanced TSI collected two awards at the International Engine Of The Year Awards — including the top honor of Best New Engine Of 2006.
The second award was won in its displacement category. A jury of 61 automotive journalists from 29 countries bestowed the awards.
Currently powering Europe's Golf GT and Touran van, the TSI is supercharged for low-end grunt and turbocharged for top end. The small-displacement 1.4-liter generates a healthy 170 horsepower in the Golf GT and 140 horsepower in the Touran while attaining remarkable mileage of over 33 miles per gallon in the city, and an uncanny
38-plus in highway cruising.
These numbers definitely back up the TSI's motto of "maximum power, minimum consumption."
Three awards would now sit on the TSI's fireplace mantel (again, if it had one) — the first was given last autumn by Popular Science.
